100 years ago today: there are further details concerning
the assassination of the Archduke and his wife and the funeral plans. The Telegraph speculates on the motives
behind the murders and the “various intrigues which at present are convulsing
the Balkans” and states that “to forecast the possible international
consequences is a delicate, and perhaps superfluous, task”. There is concern
that the death of the Archduke may “attain a yet wider influence in Central
Europe and on the direction of the Triple Alliance.” Martial law has been proclaimed in Sarajevo
following violent anti-Servian demonstrations and several arrests have been
made.
