100 years ago today: the naval fleet continues its war
exercises at Dover with the long line of destroyers described as “presenting a
picture black and menacing”. There is
concern that the King’s conference, now on its second day, is on the “verge of
collapse” as both sides remain unyielding and an agreement is felt to be an
impossibility. The Hungarian Premier has
postponed his response regarding Servia and in the Press the “approaching
crisis is spoken of in language of increasing gravity”. The Deutsch
Courier states that “every intelligent man must see that a world-war must
come some day.”
