14 July 1914

100 years ago today: the Ulster crisis continues with an ultimatum being issued by Ulster to the Government calling for exclusion from Home Rule or civil war.  The famous Russian monk Rasputin has been stabbed by a woman and is reportedly “lying at death’s door”.  A telegram has reported his death although this is unconfirmed.  There is growing concern regarding the Sarajevo crisis: “The position in which Austria-Hungary has been placed by Servia may finally become untenable even for a Great Power” and it is urged that other countries do not lend their encouragement to the heated passions in Belgrade.
