16 July 1914

100 years ago today: the King is spending the weekend inspecting the naval fleet which has been placed on a war footing as part of a planned exercise.  The naval authorities have stated that further expansion is urgently necessary.  The Cabinet Council are meeting “to determine the action of the Government with respect to the Home Rule Amending Bill and the fate of Ulster.”  The Hungarian Premier’s response to the question of whether war is inevitable in Servia is pessimistic but the article reassures that the Belgrade population does not appear to have any intention of indulging in hostile demonstrations.
