22 July 1914

100 years ago today: the King has made an appeal to the British and Irish representatives at the conference and urged them to consider the situation in a “spirit of generous compromise” in the hope that they may “result in the joy of peace and honourable settlement”. There is concern that the conference will prove abortive and result in deadlock.  The Vienna correspondent provides details of the demands that Austria-Hungary has made of Servia and there is concern regarding the tendency of the Dual Monarchy” to use the present situation to lower, and possibly to destroy, the prestige of Servia.”
