17 July 1914

100 years ago today: A second reading of the Amending Bill has been fixed in the House of Commons  and it is hoped that peace will be ultimately secured.  There is a report on the boxing match between Gunboat Smith and Georges Carpentier which finished in uproar after Smith was disqualified for hitting Carpentier whilst on the ground and thus Carpentier was declared the victor.  Queen Alexandra paid a visit to Sir Ernest Shackleton and his ship “Endurance” ahead of his projected voyage to Antartica and the South Pole and is reported to be taking a “deep interest” in this.
